Free and open-source media player Kodi which can be used to play videos, podcasts, music and other digital media files has now come under the scanner for being used for malware distribution. The malware can spread through a Kodi installation, during updates or during a single install without any updates.
The systems of the victims are used for cryptomining, and the malware have affected about 5,000 machines before the issue was fixed. The malware runs on Windows and Linux systems. The multi-stage architecture also ensures that the cryptominer cannot be easily traced. Researchers have warned that the victims are still at risk.
