The president of the software freedom conservancy Bradley Kuhn feels the greatest issue faced by people involved in open and free source software is the lack of another firmware for IoT devices. He feels that so many devices are now digital and so many devices now run Linus, and so many devices now threaten our very existence, security, and privacy.
He says there is a need for the source code for them to be able to solve all those issues and that we don’t just need the source code. What we actually need is the ability to use the source code effectively, to install it, and recompile it. It is not popular in the industry to allow people to install their own OS because the industry does not want to allow people to reinstall, and if they can get away with not allowing people to reinstall, they will do so.”
