Teams from colleges went over to the Brookhaven Lab and some other national labs for an annual competition sponsored by the department of energy which motivates students to opt for careers in cybersecurity and develop relevant skills.
Patrick Looney, the local co-organizer said, “This CyberForce competition is the inaugural one for Brookhaven. It is exciting to watch the students learn how to defend a piece of virtual infrastructure as they were attacked by cybersecurity experts whose job is to penetrate their systems. Brookhaven’s participation in the competition is important because it speaks directly to our educational mission in helping to prepare researchers of the future – in this case, cybersecurity experts.”
The U.S. energy secretary Rick Perry in a video broadcast expressed that the digital infrastructure that serves U.S. is literally under attack, and that protecting the energy infrastructure against those threats is his highest priority as a secretary.
