Infiltration and usage by hackers of an emergency warning system specifically created to alert thousands of Australians to possible dangers. It was possible for a hacker to message directly thousands of Australians after hacking an emergency warning system utilised by the government.
The Early Warning Network hack occurred when the hacker sent messages through SMS and email. The message read, “EWN has been hacked. Your personal data is not safe. We are trying to fix the security issues.” The message was a prompt to users to submit their address if they wanted to unsubscribe from the service.
EWN is utilised by federal, state, and local governments to warn Australians during emergency situations and this database carries home and mobile numbers and also email addresses. There was also a link to a website that provided customer support but it wasn’t clear whether or not the hack was a phishing attempt.
